The Black Terror: The Deep End Written
and Created By Beau Smith
Back
in 1989 while at Eclipse Comics, I got to bring
back a character from the Golden Age of comics...
The Black Terror.
Granted, the name
was the same, but the story wasn't. The Black
Terror had fallen into public domain. That meant
that me and my writin' partner on the book, Chuck
Dixon, could invent and reinvent our own modern
day version of The Black Terror.
So we did in a
three issue prestige series from Eclipse Comics.
We yanked painter/illustrator, Dan Brereton out
of art school and he did a wonderful, moody job
on the book. He was able to really capture the look
we wanted.
Fast forward to
about 1998-99. I was working at Todd McFarlane Productions.
Todd had bought what was left of Eclipse Comics
when the company went out of business. So when we
decided to expand the comics publishing end of TMP,
The Black Terror was on the list.
In reality it was
first... but through a strange twist of fate, it
never saw publication. I did the script, Clayton
Crain and Alp Altier did the art for the first issue.
We even started on the second issue, but Todd never
released it.
Why? To this day
I still don't know. We all got paid for it, so no
complaints there. But it would've been nice to see
this modern crime noir get published and satisfy
The Black Terror fans that supported the
first series with such passion.
I always felt this
series was ahead of it's time in 1989. If ya ever
get the chance to pick up the original three issue
series-The Black Terror: Seduction Of Deceit,
please do. You will not be sorry.
So, now that my
website is up and runnin' (off with your woman and
your beer) I thought I'd post up the script to The
Black Terror: The Deep End #1 for ya to read.
It'll be good for
those Black Terror fans to see where the
next step was headin' and for those of you that
wanna be writers, it'll show ya how to structure
and do a full script.
I even found some
of the pencil/inked pages that Clayton and Alp did.
I hope that helps see how it's done. Think of this
as an instructional lesson in writing. If ya got

as well as the skull and crossbones on his chest seem

his gloved hand he is holding a plastic taped package
of cocaine. BLACK TERROR: LOOKIN' FOR THIS?

Panel Two-Shot of the Black Terror looking
down at the passed out man. There is a faint smile
on his face. This is the first time we really see The
Black Terror in the open. He is wearing his Black Terror
"costume" he has a long black overcoat over

Panel Three-Shot of the doors to the
room opening and two of Tenderso's security goons coming
in with hands in their suit coats ready to pull out

the frame work. He has both pistols up and ready
and he is peering down the hall. CAPTION: (TERROR)

with both pistols up and ready. There is a smirk on

Panel Three-Cut to the main room with
Tenderso and Labruzzo. There are two of Laburzzo's
mooks, babes, and some of Tenderso's sissy boys. The
mooks have their guns drawn and ready. The babes
and sissy-boys are hiding around the furniture. Labruzzo
is a very well dressed man around 50. Heavy mustache.
Tenderso is dressed in some fashion style that
no real man would ever wear. Tenderso is in 40's and
still trying to look like a young man. Tenderso looks
panicked and Labruzzo is trying to makes sense of all
this. TENDERSO: ANTHONY...ANTHONY! THERE IS SOMEONE
SHOOTING GUNS IN MY HOUSE! TENDERSO: MAKE IT GO AWAY! LABRUZZO:
SHUT THE HELL UP, ALLIE AND GET OVER THERE WITH THE
WOMEN. LABRUZZO: FRANK, MIKE… SHOOT THE FIRST SON
OF A BITCH THAT WALKS THROUGH THAT DOOR.
Panel Four-Labruzzo has the phone in
his hand and is talking to security in the other part
of the house. He doesn't look real happy. LABRUZZO:
JACK..WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OUT THERE? JACK:(electronic
from phone) IT AIN'T GOOD, MR. LABRUZZO. THE SECOND
FLOOR CREW IS DEAD… ALL SIX OF EM'.

from the upper level of the house. There is a
wall of flames where the stairs are blocking them from
entry. We can see his men trying to put the fire
out to no avail. JACK:(INTO PHONE) SOMEBODY HAS SET

of the room. There are two soft knocks at the wooden

Panel Three-Show Labruzzo's face looking
up. LABRUZZO: MIKE… FRANK… LABRUZZO: SPRAY THE

Panel Four-Show of Mike and Frank in
front of the large door firing their guns into it with
every thing they've got. Show holes being blown in the

Frank hauling out their extra clips from their
coats to shove in their now empty guns.
Panel Two-From the other side of the
bullet hole infested door we can see shots ripping through
from the other side and slashing into the bodies of
Frank and Mike. Their guns and clips fly from
their hands as the bullets dig into them. SFX:(SHOTS)
BLADAMMMM! BLAAADAAAM! MIKE: WUAAGH! FRANK: AAYGHH!
Panel Three-The door opens wide and
through the haze of the gunfire and the smoke from the
hall stands the unclear, but menacing figure of the
Black Terror with his two massive .45's in his hands
at his sides. SFX: (DOOR OPENING) KREAAACKK!

Page 7 Panel One-Establishing shot
of the lone interstate highway in Kansas. In the
farming area. on each side of the interstate we
can see flat plains. The day is sunny and the
skies are blue. There is Jeep riding down the
highway. Orrin Ryan Delvecchio is at the wheel
of the jeep. There is a large interstate sign declaring
the name of the upcoming city. We cannot see what
it says yet. CAPTION: FOUR DAYS LATER. CAPTION:
THE STATE OF KANSAS.
Panel Two-Shot of Delvecchio through
the front windshield of the jeep. He is driving
and in a thinking mode. He is wearing a denim shirt,
jeans and a leather jacket. Sunglasses. CAPTION:

The look on his face is now grim as the name Kennedy
reminds him of his battle with former Division leader
jack Kennedy and the Capone family. CAPTION: (DELVECCHIO)

Page 8 Panel One-This begins the
flashback sequence stating some of the facts from the
original Black Terror mini-series. NOTE: Klayton: You
might want to have the three issues handy for reference.
Show Delvecchio and Frankie Dio dressed in dark suits
looking menacing to a lower rival mob boss. The
mob guy is sitting behind a desk. On the desk there
are a few mailing envelopes with wads of cash in them.
The guy looks kinda scared. Delvecchio looks
grim and tough he is handling the envelopes. Dio
has a screwy semi-psycho smile on his face and is twirling
his nasty stiletto knife between his fingers as he leans
close to the mob guy. NOTE: Letterer: The flashback
captions should look different from the ones in current
continuity. CAPTION: (DELVECCHIO) SEVEN YEARS AGO.
IT WAS GOING TO BE THE BIGGEST BUST THE DIVISION HAD
EVER PULLED DOWN. CAPTION: (DELVECCHIO) OVER TWO
YEARS IN DEEP COVER AND SHIT TO INJECT MYSELF INTO THE
WOMB OF THE CAPONE POLITICAL AND CRIME SYSTEM.
Panel Two-Show Delvecchio with all of
the envelopes in a large bank bag and beginning to walk
off. Dio is turning with Delvecchio, still twirling
the knife. The mob guy looks a little relieved
that they are leaving. CAPTION: (DELVECCHIO) SADDLED
WITH FRANKIE "THE FIREMAN" DIO.
Panel Three-Shot of Frankie with a cruel
smile on his face turning back towards the mob guy.
Knife not twirling, but still in his hand ready
to cut, slash, or stab. Delvecchio' large back
is to him and near the door unaware of what the cat-quick
Dio is doing. CAPTION: (DELVECCHIO) THE MOST SADISTIC
